Photos and contacts – business
Photography in the resume will always be a plus, even if the position does not involve communication with people. The photo will make the resume personalized: it is easier to notice, and the response from the photo is more difficult to miss or delete. But you need to critically choose a portrait for your resume: a bad photo can ruin everything. A professional portrait photo, business and neutral, is best suited.
In the contacts section, pay attention to the mailbox – it must correspond to professional status. The address email@example.com will emphasize the non-business approach to work. But firstname.lastname@example.org is already better.
Some applicants indicate in the resume their home address up to a specific apartment. It is enough to indicate the city or the nearest metro, for example, “Mytishchi” or “the village of Mansurovo in the Kursk region”.
An exception is the resume of top managers. Salaries of managers are calculated differently in different companies, so specific expectations can frighten employers.
If you are not a beginner, then experience is the main part of the resume. Approach this section with particular care.
- The experience should look solid, that is, without long breaks in a career. If there were breaks, then they should have an explanation: maternity leave, doing business, freelance, and so on. We talked more about how to write about gaps in experience in this article .
- If you change jobs more than once a year, this will alert the employer. You have been promoted – write about it in one block.
- Pay attention to the last three years of work, this is of interest to employers in the first place. About the initial stages of a career and about what was more than 10 years ago, you can tell very briefly.
- If the company is unknown in the market, indicate its type of activity. Not just LLC Horns and Hooves, but the Black Sea Branch of the Arbat Office for Harvesting Horns and Hoofs. The activities of the company can be briefly described in the block of responsibilities.
- In the headings, write the names of the positions generally accepted in the market: for example, “commercial director” instead of “head of the procurement and sales coordination department”. The same goes for the title of the resume. Often, applicants copy the last position into it, which is wrong: the name should reflect the essence of the work, and not an entry in the labor. For example, a “project manager” looks more universal than a “managing director of a business unit”. Employers will find such resumes faster through a search.
- Never copy a list of duties from job descriptions. Highlight the most important and write down in a clear language, without clericalism. For example, “optimization of business processes” instead of “implementation of project activities to optimize business processes”. Five to ten tasks will be enough.
- In addition to work responsibilities, be sure to indicate your specific achievements and results of activities (for example, “together with the IT department, he developed corporate standards for controlling business processes”).
Avoid common phrases like “was the most hardworking employee of the department” – this is an opinion that cannot be verified, therefore it is not interesting to the employer. But “became the best employee of the department according to the results of the year” – a useful line.
Sometimes job applicants describe work in a particular company as if they write a chapter from their own biography: “Here I started my career from the lowest positions, diligently seeking promotion” or “With a quick acquaintance, you might think that the job was easy for me, but actually it was exactly vice versa. ” These examples are the standard of how experience should not be described. The resume worked if the employer understood the experience in a few seconds and realized that this candidate was worth a closer look. And you can demonstrate your enthusiasm in a cover letter.
All educational courses indicated in the CV must be professional. It is better to miss something than to add dubious certificates – for example, about massage courses – if this knowledge is not needed in the work.
It is always better to talk about the thorny path upstairs at an interview. Therefore, you can omit studying in a technical school or vocational school, if you have a diploma of higher education in the same field.
Many applicants completely ignore this section, but in vain: it is often here that the recruiter looks here after meeting with the experience and education of the candidate. Key skills are specific knowledge and skills that are directly related to work processes. For lawyers, these can be “Arbitration Courts” and “Corporate Law”, for the logistics manager “Working with Customs” and “Incoterms”, for the financier – “Statistical Analysis” and “Budgeting”, and so on.
Avoid the obvious things: no need to write that you know Windows, Internet Explorer and use e-mail.
Often applicants confuse skills with personal qualities. So in the skills are “Responsibility” or “Punctuality”. We advise you to write about these qualities in the “About Me” section and avoid commonplace. Instead of “Responsibility” and “Punctuality” write “I am conscientious in completing tasks” and “Always keep within the promised time frame”. The essence of this will not change, but the wording will be remembered.
But a hobby in most cases is better not to indicate. It’s not interesting for a recruiter, and exotic activities (such as esotericism and even yoga) can even frighten off.
How to write
The final text of the resume should be a squeeze from which everything that was removed in principle without meaning has been removed: introductory words, epithets, participial and participial phrases, superfluous verbal adjectives and nouns.
The shorter and simpler the sentences, the better.
Insert marker words into your resume so that the recruiter can find it through a search. For example, if you are an auditor and work with offshore companies, then the word “offshore” must appear in your resume.
Think about which keywords are relevant to your profession, imagining what terms the recruiter will use when searching for a resume. Use the information from the vacancies that interest you.
In hh.ru, a recruiter’s acquaintance with you always begins with a cover letter. Usually it begins with a welcome phrase: “Hello! My name is Kondraty Stepanov and I’m interested in your job as a city posadnik. ”
In a new paragraph, briefly describe your achievements and basic skills (“led the department”, “participated in projects”, and so on). This paragraph should not be longer than three to four sentences.
The third paragraph is the key to the recruiter’s heart. Write in it why you want to work in the company and why you think your candidacy is suitable. Try to avoid commonplace phrases like “I consider working in your company an opportunity for further development” – such phrases will make the recruiter suspect that you are copying the same cover letter for different vacancies.
It is customary to end the resume with a phrase confirming your readiness to drive up for an interview: “Thank you for your attention and I will be glad to meet to answer your questions!”
When the work is finished, we advise you to carefully go through the text two or three times, correcting errors and editing not-so-good phrases. Typos in headings, company names, and job titles will especially alert the employer.
If you want to show a resume to someone else, choose a person with experience as a recruiter – otherwise you are guaranteed to get a bunch of unnecessary tips. If you are considering several different positions — for example, “Sales Manager” and “Head of Sales,” create two different resumes.
